National Barefoot Day

Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
"You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during
the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one
set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most,
you have not been there for me?"

The Lord replied,
"The times when you have
seen only one set of footprints,
is when I carried you."

I hate shoes!  The second I walk in my house, off they come.  I wouldn't even wear them outside, but my feet are so tender that I have to.  I’m also very ticklish, which is an inconvenience when you are barefoot, and you have family around who wants to torture you.  I love the summer, because you can wear sandals and flip flops and it’s almost like being barefoot.  I don't like the term barefoot and pregnant though, because that makes me think that women are only useful if they have babies and stay at home.

Today is National Barefoot Day.  It serves two purposes.  It allows people like me, who hate shoes, to be free of them for a day without feeling the guilt of not wearing shoes.  It also puts the spotlight one people who don't wear shoes because they have none.  There are approximately 1.5 billion people in the world who don't have shoes.  This day is being promoted by Soles for Souls, an organization that helps to provide shoes to those who are without.  There are week long activities such as marathons, shoe drives, fun runs & walkathons, retail trade-in events, concerts, festivals and more.

How you can participate is to donate shoes you no longer wear, and if you are in the need of new shoes, I would like to suggest TOMS shoes.  For every pair you purchase, they donate a pair.

So...today, relax, kick off your shoes and go barefoot, but keep in mind those who don't have any shoes, and check out this site for more information on ways you can help.  http://www.soles4souls.org/get_involved/barefootweek2011.html

(Google Image)

By Akindman

Each week in June will highlight a different leading cause of unintentional injury and death:

Summertime Safety – June 1 to 4
In addition to the safety themes below, the summer season traditionally is a time of increased unintentional injuries and fatalities. Find fact sheets on a variety of summer safety topics.

Preventing Overexertion – June 5 to 11
Overexertion is the third-leading cause of unintentional injuries treated in emergency departments. The most common injuries are strains and sprains, especially of the lower back.

(Google Image)
Teen Driving Safety – June 12 to 18
Promoting teen driving safety is crucial to keeping our roadways safe. Each year, more than 5,500 people are killed in crashes involving teen drivers. Victims include teen drivers, their passengers, and occupants in other vehicles, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls – June 19 to 25
Falls are one of the nation’s leading causes of unintentional injuries treated in emergency departments. Adults 55 and older are more prone to becoming victims of falls.

On the Road, Off the Phone – June 26 to 30
Motor vehicle crashes remain the nation’s leading cause of unintentional death. A major contributing factor is distracted driving. NSC estimates 23% of all motor vehicle crashes involve cell phone use behind the wheel.

Ineptocracy

Couldn't find it in my old Webster's dictionary so I Googled it and discovered it is a recently "coined" new word found on T-shirts on eBay:

Read this one over slowly and absorb the facts that are within this definition!  I love this word and believe that it will become a recognized English word.  Finally, a word to describe our current political situation...

Clean Air Month

(Google Image)

By Diane Forrest

When I first moved to Natchez, there was a terrible smell in the air.  It smelled like rotten eggs.  I came to find out that the smell was coming from the Paper Mill.  You could smell it from miles around, and every time a visitor would ask "What's that smell?” the home folks would reply, "That's the smell of money!"  While it was true the paper mill supplied many jobs to the area, and filtered alot of money through the community, the pollution it put out was damaging too many people's health.  The paper mill shut down several years ago, but people here still remember that awful smell.

A friend of mine has very bad allergies.  They cause him to sneeze uncontrollably, and his nose stays red from blowing.  He thinks the solution to his problem is to empty out his room, clean, paint and install an air cleaner.  Start over all fresh and new.  I'm not sure if that will help his allergies, but once his job is complete I will see how effective it is.  My husband had a very sensitive nose, could smell anything from a mile away.  I guess that's why I have 4 air cleaners in my home.  2 in one room!
(Google Image)

This is clean air month.  Clean air, is air which has a natural balance of gases such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Clean air does not contain pollutants or allergens. Clean air does not harm the environment, nor is it a cause or trigger of health problems.
(Google Image)
Poor quality air can harm the environment and can affect us all. Toxic air pollution is linked to serious conditions such as cancer and chronic bronchitis. Air pollution can exacerbate pre-existing conditions such as asthma.  Air pollution can also harm the environment. The burning of fossil fuels (often for transport or electricity generation) releases high levels of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere. These gases react with other gases and water to create rain which is acidic.
(Google Image)
Ways you can participate include using your car less, and walking or riding a bike more.  Not only is it good for the air, but also good for your body too.  Limit use of aerosol spray cans and don't douse yourself in cologne or perfume.   I know a couple who have worn their perfume for so long, they can no longer smell it, so they put more and more on.  When I worked in the hospital we were encouraged not to apply perfume as it may be irritating to some patients.  One of my personal biggest causes of air pollution is my cooking.  My husband used to say he knew when supper was ready when the smoke detector went off.  So I have decided to do my part this month and cook as little as possible!

What things can you do to cut down on air pollution and help clean the air?

Celebrating National Rocky Road Day

(Google Image)

By Akindman

Ice cream tycoon William Dreyer invented this favorite ice cream flavor in 1929, at a time when ice cream was only vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Dreyer chopped up some nuts, tossed in a few marshmallows, and gave his creation a fun name to cheer people up in the midst of a Great Depression. Ice cream has been the go-to cure for hard times and heartbreak ever since.
