Cream Filled Donut Day

(Google Image)

By Diane Forrest

When I was in high school, I worked part time at the local grocery store.  I worked in nearly all the departments, from cashier, to stocking the shelves, unloading the trucks, produce, dairy and the deli department.  Working in the deli was the hardest challenge to me.  I lived in a small town, so we didn't have any big chain donut shops.  We made our own donuts fresh every day.  In the mornings when I entered the store for work, the smell of the freshly cooked donuts filled the air.  When I made my way to the department, there were nice hot donuts dripping with glaze waiting for me.

Along with the glazed donuts, we made chocolate covered, cinnamon twists, jelly filled and cream filled.  The bavarian cream filled were my favorite.  They were similar to chocolate éclairs which I regularly made for my uncle.  Instead of cutting the donut hole for the glazed donuts, we simply fried the whole donut, then filled a bag with the rich vanilla cream then squirted it inside the pastry.  Once filled, we covered the top with chocolate icing.  These delicious treats were very addictive, but after several months of working in the deli I had my fill of them.

After graduating from college, I stopped working at the grocery store, and no longer had access to the fresh hot donuts as easily as before.  I would have to go out of my way to find donuts again.  I had moved again to another small town with no large donut chains such as Krispy Kream or Dunkin Donuts. We do however have a local donut shop, and if I time it just right I can get there early enough to get some hot glazed donuts and top it off with a wonderful Bavarian cream chocolate covered donut, and reminense about my older days of donut making.

Today is Cream Filled Donut Day.  This day only comes once a year, so don't miss this opportunity to enjoy a delicious cream filled donut.  You can find them with vanilla cream, chocolate cream, even banana cream. So stop by your local donut shop and pick one or two up.

Donuts - Cream Filled Donuts - Yum

By Diane Forrest,

It’s a beautiful Wednesday morning in the middle of September...why not stop for donuts?  Today is a perfect day because it is Cream Filled Donut Day!  For those of you who don't know, donuts are deep fried flour dough that is very versatile.  They can be dipped in a sugar glaze, covered with chocolate icing, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar or powdered sugar.  They can be round with a hole in the center or solid and filled with jelly or cream. They are mainly viewed as a breakfast or morning food, however can be enjoyed at any time of the day or night.  Many donut shops are open 24 hours a day, these accounts for one of the reasons they are frequented by police officers.  Before there were other all night restaurants open, those working late night shifts and needing coffee to stay awake, could only find their caffeine fix at an all-night donut shop.

Years ago when I worked at the local grocery store, I would go in for work first thing in the morning and smell the donuts cooking.  There is no better way to start the day than eating a nice warm donut dripping in sugar glaze.   That is until you work in the donut area.  After stuffing yourself with donuts every day you can get really tired of them, and never want to see another donut.  Luckily for me, that condition didn’t last long, and I’m happy to report I can continue to enjoy donuts.

Everyone has their own favorite type.  For my husband, it was chocolate covered or bear claws.  My mother likes the cinnamon twists and cake donuts.  My dad and son are fans of the glazed donuts, and I love the cream filled.

The cream filled donut is solid, with no hole in the center.  The center is filled with a vanilla cream; I like the Bavarian cream which is more like vanilla pudding.  Then it is topped with chocolate icing, or either covered with the sugar glaze.  Another type of cream filling is made with sugar and shortening.  It is light and airy, like marshmallows.  I can't eat this much sugar in the morning, however they make a great dessert for lunch or dinner.

If you are not fortunate to live near a donut shop or bakery, you can make some quick and easy donuts with this recipe.  All you need is hot oil for frying and canned biscuits.

Drop the biscuits in the boiling oil.  Use either a deep fryer or frying pan with enough oil to cover the dough.  When they are brown, lay them on a paper towel and allow draining.  Prepare the filling with the following recipe or either a package of prepared vanilla pudding.  If you don't have a pastry bag, you can get an icing tip in the grocery store by the canned icing.  Put the tip in a Ziploc baggie, fill the baggie with your filling of choice and squeeze into the donut.  Spread the canned chocolate icing on top and enjoy!

Cream Filling:
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

Using an electric mixer, whip shortening in a medium bowl with confectioners' sugar and white sugar until creamy, 5 to 10 minutes

Hope you have time today to enjoy a delicious cream filled donuts
