I have always been drawn to lighthouse and been blessed to see so many of them over the years - here in main land US on both coast (and Hawaii and Alaska) and the Gulf of Mexico; Guam; Philippines; Cuba; most Mediterranean Sea countries; England, Portugal; Spain; the Atlantic side of South America and the beautiful Caribbean Sea Islands. Each of them having their own unique features, setting them apart for the others.
It was on this day in 1789 that Congress first approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouses. Two hundred years later, Congress made August 7th the official day in celebration of the history and purpose of lighthouses across America.
For centuries lighthouses have served as beacons of light, guiding ships safely to a harbor in fog or a storm.
International Lighthouse day is celebrated later in the month for 48 hours, August 20-21.
