Photographer Appreciation Month

(Google Image)

By Terry Orr

As far back as I can remember – I have been attracted to photographs, images, paintings and other forms of catching a moment in time. Little did I know back in grade school that this interest would be common link for both my professional and personal life!  One of my favorite pastimes today is surfing the Internet – looking at specific and general Blog and Web Sites that contain these priceless pieces of art.

(Google Image)
In 1960, my Dad married June (our second step-mother) who was an artist in her own right and her father – Vernon was a practicing minister, farmer, journeyman carpenter, engaging story-teller, a World War 1 photographer veteran and all around wonderful person to know and be around.  It wasn't until after I had joined the Navy that I learned about his efforts during his war – taking photos by leaning out of plans and hot air balloons. A few years later – I learned that he had kept current on photos/images being taken by man and unmanned vehicles and various space platforms.  Sadly, he passed before I was able to bring him to Washington, DC for special meeting on where we were and going in the imagery business.

The details of this black and white photograph are simply amazing.

World Menopause Month

(Google Image)

Nurse Diane

Almost every afternoon I got to visit my father and sit in his workshop and watch television.  Lately it’s been very cool in the northern states, but here in the south, a cool spell starts at 75 degrees.  Last week I show up at my father's wearing my usual attire of shorts, when it seems really warm in his shop.  He had just installed an air condition unit, so I know that was working ok.  As I sat down in my normal seat, it hit me.  There was a heater on right in front of me!!!  I asked my father if he was cold …and he said I get hot, then cold, and back and forth...so I told him he must be going through the change.

The change I was referring to is of course Menopause.  This causes me to wonder why all women's problems begin with MEN...menopause, menstruation, and mental illness.
(Google Image)
Menopause can lead to a variety of age-related diseases including heart disease and osteoporosis. Moreover, symptoms of menopause can have a truly negative impact on the quality of daily life. By tightening our reigns on these issues, we can keep them in check so we can continue living strong, meaningful and long lives. For World Menopause Month, learn what the biggest threats to your health are at menopause and ways to prevent them according to redhotmamas.org.
(Google Image)
It’s a woman’s world these days and we are fortunate to be living in a time where we no longer have to suffer from menopause in silence and alone. The old, negative, hushed attitudes of menopause have been thrown to the wayside. We are no longer are fed the line, “it’s all in your head”. Through public awareness and modern research, menopause symptoms are taken seriously and considered very real. Advanced and innovative treatments are now available that provide us with the quality healthcare we need to control symptoms and conditions related to menopause.

Armed with knowledge from friends, family, menopause support groups like Red Hot Mamas and your healthcare provider, you can tackle the uneasiness of the transition.

Emotional Intelligence and Wellness Month

(Google Image)
By Diane Forrest

(Google Image)
I have been having a string of bad luck lately when it comes to Home Owners Insurance.  If you have ever been canceled by an insurance company, then you will know how difficult it is to get more insurance.  If you are able to find another company, then you will more than likely be charged more than you have been paying.  I was canceled by my company three years ago.  Apparently they just want you to pay for it, not actually use the insurance.  Since I had three small claims in five years, they decided to drop me. Luckily I found another company, and was paying the same amount, so it works out.  In August I got a letter from them saying they were dropping me.  I had never made a claim, however they said my roof and electrical wiring was too old.  Seeing as how they were both recently replaced, I sent them the information and they not only reinstated my policy, but I got an even lower rate.  When I went online to pay my bill this morning, I discovered that my policy had in fact been terminated.  I wasn't too worried, since I just chalked it up to bookkeeping records.  So...I call the customer service and learned that I had in fact been canceled, because they no longer covered homes in my state.  Well as you can imagine, I lost it.  Not only was my policy gone, but that was my second insurance cancellation  and the prospects of finding new insurance was bleak.  My stress level hit the roof.
(Google Image)
Stress is running high for alot of people this month, the presidential elections coming up, stress from lost jobs, increases in bills, gas and food.  There is an increase in violent crimes and other catastrophes.  I was just reading about another mall shooting killing four and injured another four.  The headlines this morning stated a 10 year old girl was heading to court this morning on manslaughter charges.  All these issues increase your body's level of stress tolerance.
(Google Image)
This month we are looking at Emotional Intelligence and Wellness.  'Emotional intelligence' refers to the ability to identify and cope with emotions on oneself and others.   'Emotional wellness' refers to happiness and resilience as well as the absence of distressing emotional issues and the presence of healthy coping techniques.  There are several coping mechanisms to help you deal with stress.  As many of you know, laughter is the best medicine.  It is healthy to be able to laugh at the things that bother you, and if you tuned into the vice presidential debates, I think that Joe Biden uses that method as well.  Crying is another form of release of stress.  Sometimes there is nothing better than a good cry to wash your troubles away.
(Google Image)
According to emotional intelligence experts Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer, there are a few different factors that comprise emotional intelligence.
  • The first is an ability to accurately perceive emotions, which includes both your own emotions and the emotions of other people.
  • A second factor is an ability to understand these emotions. It may be one thing to identify that someone is experiencing an emotion, but it is also important to understand the possible meanings and causes behind that feeling.
  • Third is the ability to use emotions in reasoning. Research has shown that emotions have a major impact on how we think, including how we prioritize and attend to information.
  • The final factor is the ability to regulate and effectively manage emotions. Salovey and Mayer suggest that seeking out mood-enhancing situations, people and experiences are a few methods that can be used to regulate emotions.

(Google Image)
In July of this year, Judi England wrote an interesting article titled “Four Room” that helps one better understand Emotional Intelligence and Wellness. This quote came from part one of the four part article.

“There is an Indian proverb or axiom that says that everyone is a house with four rooms, a physical, a mental, an emotional, and a spiritual. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time but, unless we go into every room every day, even if only to keep it aired, we are not a complete person.  ” – Rumer Godden, “A House with Four Rooms”

(Google Image)

If you are bogged down, and disheartened about the current situations in your life, the important thing is to: 1) Recognize there is a problem, and 2) Seek help.  If laughing or crying doesn't make you feel better, try talking it out with a friend, family member, pastor, or professional.  Unless the problems are dealt with or resolved, they will build up and cause an even bigger problem.

National Popcorn Poppin' Month

(Google Image)

By Terry Orr

Life on the Internet can be a mixed blessing and deep dark hole of frustration.  Today, I want to share one of those unique and super resources that you will visit frequently if you’re a popcorn lover like me.  October is National Popcorn Poppin’ Month, so named because it is when popcorn is harvested in the Midwest.

(Google Image)
According to Wikipedia - Popcorn was first discovered thousands of years ago by the Guatemalans. It is one of the oldest forms of corn: evidence of popcorn from 3600 BCE was found in New Mexico and even earlier evidence dating to perhaps as early as 4700 BCE was found in Peru.

(Google Image)
Fun Popcorn Facts (from www.popcorn.org)
  • Americans consume some 16 billion quarts of this whole grain, good-for-you treat. That’s 51 quarts per man, woman, and child.
  • Compared to most snack foods, popcorn is low in calories. Air-popped popcorn has only 31 calories per cup. Oil-popped is only 55 per cup.
  • Popcorn is a type of maize (or corn), a member of the grass family, and is scientifically known as Zea mays everta.
  • Of the 6 types of maize/corn—pod, sweet, flour, dent, flint, and popcorn—only popcorn pops.
  • Popcorn is a whole grain. It is made up of three components: the germ, endosperm, and pericarp (also known as the hull).
  • Popcorn needs between 13.5-14% moisture to pop.
  • Popcorn differs from other types of maize/corn in that is has a thicker pericarp/hull. The hull allows pressure from the heated water to build and eventually bursts open. The inside starch becomes gelatinous while being heated; when the hull bursts, the gelatinized starch spills out and cools, giving it its familiar popcorn shape.
  • Most U.S. popcorn is grown in the Midwest, primarily in Indiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri.
  • Many people believe the acres of corn they see in the Midwest during growing season could be picked and eaten for dinner, or dried and popped. In fact, those acres are typically field corn, which is used largely for livestock feed, and differs from both sweet corn and popcorn.
  • The peak period for popcorn sales for home consumption is in the fall.
  • Most popcorn comes in two basic shapes when it's popped: snowflake and mushroom. Snowflake is used in movie theaters and ballparks because it looks and pops bigger. Mushroom is used for candy confections because it doesn't crumble.
  • Popping popcorn is one of the number one uses for microwave ovens. Most microwave ovens have a "popcorn" control button.
  • "Popability" is popcorn lingo that refers to the percentage of kernels that pop.
  • There is no such thing as “hull-less” popcorn. All popcorn needs a hull in order to pop. Some varieties of popcorn have been bred so the hull shatters upon popping, making it appear to be hull-less.
  • How high popcorn kernels can pop? Up to 3 feet in the air.
  • The world’s largest popcorn ball was created by volunteers in Sac City, Iowa in February, 2009.  It weighed 5,000 lbs., stood over 8 ft. tall, and measured 28.8 ft. in circumference.
  • If you made a trail of popcorn from New York City to Los Angeles, you would need more than 352,028,160 popped kernels!

When thinking of popcorn, often I think of the ending of the 1985 movie “Real Genius” with Val Kilmer and others.

National Greasy Food Day

(Google Image)
By Chef Diane

I can’t think of a better snack than some hot crinkle cut French fries and a big glob of ketchup.  Of course I can't eat that every day - maybe once a month.  But today, I can go ahead and get some, because it’s National Greasy Food Day.

(Google Image)
Here in the south we are famous for our fried foods.  Fried chicken is nearly a must for Sunday dinner, and buttered biscuits with gravy are also a staple.  Then there is Chicken Fried Steak, Fried Catfish with hush-puppies, and fried okra.  In fact, we just held our state fair, and one of the most popular exhibits is to see what new fried dish the chefs have concocted.

(Google Image)
Our bodies crave certain foods at different times, sometimes you want something sweet, sometimes its sour, others it’s baked, then sometimes fried.  While researching for this article I found a list of 25 ultimate greasy foods.  They include:

  • Fried chicken
  • Pan Pizza from Pizza Hut
  • Chicken wings
  • Bacon
  • Ribs
  • Cheeseburgers
  • Fried pickles
  • Fried green tomatoes
  • Even fried Kool-Aid

(Google Image)

Today is National Greasy Food Day, so go ahead and grab something greasy for supper or lunch today, without the added guilt.  I read on punchbowl.com that fried chicken is the most ordered sit down dinner when eating out.  So visit the colonel, and grab a bucket of chicken and enjoy a little grease today.

United Nations Day

(Google Image)
By Diane Forrest

One of my favorite action movies with George Clooney is the Peacekeepers.  It is a story about the theft of a nuclear bomb, and the person who now has control of it has traveled to New York in an attempt to blow up the United Nations building in retaliation of the death of his wife and child.  Luckily that didn't happen, but that gave me some knowledge about the United Nations, and what they do.

(Google Image)
According to Wikipedia, the United Nations was established to replace the flawed League of Nations in 1945 in order to maintain international peace and promote cooperation in solving international economic, social and humanitarian problems. The earliest concrete plan for a new world organization was begun under the aegis of the U.S. State Department in 1939. Franklin D. Roosevelt first coined the term 'United Nations' as a term to describe the Allied countries. The term was first officially used on 1 January 1942, when 26 governments signed the Atlantic Charter, pledging to continue the war effort. On 25 April 1945, the UN Conference on International Organization began in San Francisco, attended by 50 governments and a number of non-governmental organizations involved in drafting the United Nations Charter. The UN officially came into existence on 24 October 1945 upon ratification of the Charter by the five then-permanent members of the Security Council—France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States—and by a majority of the other 46 signatories. The first meetings of the General Assembly, with 51 nations represented, and the Security Council, took place in Westminster Central Hall in London in January 1946.

Out of the 196 countries in the world, there are only 3 that are not members of the UN.  These are Kosovo, Taiwan, and the Vatican City.
(Google Image)
Today is United Nations Day, and they are celebrating with week-long activities.  United Nations Day is devoted to making known to peoples of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations Organization. United Nations Day is part of United Nations Week, which runs from 20 to 26 October.  United Nations Day has traditionally been marked throughout the world with meetings, discussions and exhibits about the achievements and goals of the organization. In 1971, the General Assembly recommended that member states observe it as a public holiday.
