Quirky Country Music Titles

By Diane Forrest

Last year the winner of the country music video award went to Toby Keith.  The song was Red Solo Cup.  The entire video was devoted to singing the praises of a red plastic cup.  However, its a very catchy song, and I sing it in my head every time I see a red cup....Red Solo cup...I lift you up!  Lets have a Party!

I just can't seem to stop it.
Country music artists sing about everything, from giving beer to horses and since the phone still ain’t ringing, I guess its still not you.  According to punchbowl.com, country music evolved from Appalachian folk music in the 1920s and became a nationwide sensation in the 1940s. The Grand Ole Opry radio station in Nashville, Tennessee began broadcasting weekly concerts that showcased all the different genres of country music—hillbilly, honky-tonk, bluegrass, western, rockabilly, gospel, and more.

There are so many fun songs to choose from for the title of Most Quirky, here are a few:
  • ‘Dixie Rose Deluxe’s Honky-Tonk, Feed Store, Gun Shop, Used Car, Beer, Bait, BBQ, Barber Shop, Laundromat’
  • ‘Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed’
  • ‘If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold it Against Me’
  • ‘Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off’
  • ‘Did I Shave My Legs for This?’

The following list was shared last year on the Andrew Carter Talk show on Cjad:
  • She Got The Ring And I Got The Finger
  • Get Your Tongue Outta My Mouth ‘Cause I’m Kissing You Goodbye
  • If I Can’t Be Number One In Your Life,
  • Then Number Two On You
  • You’re the Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly
  • Can’t Get Over You, So Why Don’t You Get Under Me?
  • All My Exes Live in Texas
  • If Love were Oil, I’d be a Quart Low
  • At the Gas Station of Love, I Got the Self-Service Pump
  • If You Can’t Live Without Me, Why Aren’t You Dead Yet?
  • I Don’t Know Whether To Kill Myself Or Go Bowling
  • There Ain’t Enough Room in my Fruit of the Looms
  • to Hold All My Lovin’ for You
  • It’s Hard to Kiss the Lips at Night
  • that Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long
  • I Still Miss You Baby, But My Aim’s Gettin’ Better

Of course you could spend days looking at all the song titles and watching funny video's.  Alan Jackson wrote a song about still loving bologna sandwiches, and made a really cute video too.

Today is Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day.  If you don't see one of your favorites listed...leave it in the comment section below, and then spend the day listening to some of your favorite country songs.  Cowboy hats or boots not required, but recommended.

National Joe Day

By Diane Forrest

During the 2008 Presidential Debates against John McCain and President Obama, an unknown hero was born, his name is Joe, the Plumber.   McCain used his name as a metaphor to describe every man who was not in favor of redistributing the wealth as Obama had discussed.  The name Joe is frequently used when addressing someone who's name you don't know...such as " What do you know, Joe?"

While the name Joe may not appear on the top 10 list of names for boys according to the ssa.gov website, the name Joe has had a long history, and belongs to several fascinating people.  One of the first famous Joe's that I can think of is the father of Jesus, Joseph.  I wonder if Mary would say, "So Joe, what do you know?" I have had a few wonderful men in my life named Joe.  I had an Uncle Joe, who was a calm, quiet man.  I went to school with a guy named Joe, who was a wild and crazy guy, and today, one of my best friend's is named Joe.  The common thread in each of these Joe's is they all have big  hearts, and would go out of their way to help a friend or stranger in need. It was their desire to make the world a better place, and their actions made me a better person just by knowing them.

One of the sweetest stories I know about a Joe, is about Joe DiMaggio, who put roses on Marilyn Monroe's grave every week until he passed away.  Such love and loyalty and devotion is truly heartwarming.   Today is National Joe Day.  Its a day to celebrate all the great Joe's you know, and if you don't have a wonderful Joe in your life, then for today, you can change your name to Joe and be a wonderful person to someone else.

As for my best friend Joe, he recently celebrated his 75th birthday, and has been under the weather with bouts of the flu, viruses and seasonal allergies, and I would like to give a shout out to him, and pray that he recovers soon, so he can get back to doing what he does best, being a wonderful friend to everyone he knows.  Get Well Quick Joe!! We are praying for you!

Here are some other famous Joe's:
  • Mighty Joe Young
  • Joe Six Pack
  • Joe Camel
  • Joe Montana
  • Joe Biden
  • Joe Cool
  • Joe Lieberman
  • Trader Joe's
  • GI Joe
  • Joe Jackson
  • Joe Dowdle
  • Shoeless Joe Jackson
  • Joe Mauer
  • Joe Mantegna
  • Joe Palca
  • Joe DiMaggio
  • Joe Namath
  • Joe Theismann

Create Your Own Holiday

By Terry Orr

What is a Holiday?
A holiday in many parts of the world is a synonym for a vacation or a specific trip for the purpose of recreation or tourism, but in the United States of America, it is considered to be a day designated as having special significance for which individuals, a government, or a religious group have deemed that observance is warranted. It is generally an official (more common) or unofficial observance of religious, national, or cultural significance, often accompanied by celebrations or festivities. A holiday does not necessarily exclude doing normal work: the relatively minor Jewish holiday of Chanukah has been described as a "working holiday"[1] and those who celebrate a holiday such as Diwali may have to work a normal schedule in countries where it is not a public holiday. (Source: Wikipedia)

I struck gold once again today while researching the Internet for this article!  Mrs. Muddle's Holiday website is a wonderful site to spend some time reviewing about all sorts of holidays. She also provides some excellent insight on creating your own holiday.

What would be your Holiday and how would you celebrate it?

Learning Disabilities

By Nurse Diane

Albert Einstein is probably one of the most well known brilliant minds in history.  Did you know that he had a bad memory and a constant failure to memorize the simplest of things? He would not remember the months in the year yet he would succeed in solving some of the most complicated mathematical formulas of the time without any trouble. He may have never learned how to properly tie his shoelaces but his scientific contributions and theories still have a major effect on all of todays current knowledge of science.
He, along with other people such as Alexander Graham Bell, Winston Churchill, Woodrow Wilson, General George Patton, Cher, Tom Cruise, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison and many others suffered from a learning disablilty called Dyslexia.  Dyslexia is a lifelong challenge. This language-based processing disorder can hinder reading, writing, spelling, and sometimes even speaking. Dyslexia is not a sign of poor intelligence or laziness or the result of impaired hearing or vision. Children and adults with dyslexia have a neurological disorder that causes their brains to process and interpret information differently.

Another learning disorder is called Dyscalculia, problems with math.  Another disorder, Dysgraphia is a learning disability that affects writing, which requires a complex set of motor and information processing skills. It can lead to problems with spelling, poor handwriting, and putting thoughts on paper. People with dysgraphia might have trouble organizing letters, numbers, and words on a line or page.

Dyspraxia is a disorder that affects motor skill development. People with dyspraxia have trouble planning and completing fine motor tasks. This can vary from simple motor tasks such as waving goodbye to more complex tasks like brushing teeth. It is not a learning disability (LD) but often coexists with other LD’s and conditions that impact learning.

This month is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month. To learn more about learning disabilities, and ways for you to help, click on the site for the National Center of Learning Disabilities http://www.ncld.org/.

World Tuberculosis (TB) Day

By Terry Orr
Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but they can also damage other parts of the body.
TB spreads through the air when a person with TB of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, or talks. If you have been exposed, you should go to your doctor for tests. You are more likely to get TB if you have a weak immune system.

Symptoms of TB in the lungs may include:
  • A bad cough that lasts 3 weeks or longer
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Coughing up blood or mucus
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
Skin tests, blood tests, x-rays, and other tests can tell if you have TB. If not treated properly, TB can be deadly. You can usually cure active TB by taking several medicines for a long period of time.

National Endometriosis Month

By Nurse Diane

When I started college, I moved into the dorm.  Across the hall was a girl who could be found curled up in her bed one week out of every month.  She would lie in bed with the lights on and a cold coke in a bottle by her bed next to a bottle of tylenol.  My friend was suffering from excruciating stomach cramps every month during her menustration cycle.  Looking back on her condition now, I'm sure she must have had endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a female health disorder that occurs when cells from the lining of the womb (uterus) grow in other areas of the body. This can lead to pain, irregular bleeding, and problems getting pregnant.  The cause is unknown, however it does run in families. Other factors contributing to endometriosis include:
  • started your period at a young age
  • Never had children
  • Have frequent periods or they last 7 or more days
  • Closed hymen, which blocks the flow of menstrual blood during the period

Symptoms include:
  • Painful periods
  • Pain in the lower abdomen before and during menstruation
  • Cramps for a week or two before menstruation and during menstruation; cramps may be steady and range from dull to severe)
  • Pain during or following sexual intercourse
  • Pain with bowel movements
  • Pelvic or low back pain that may occur at any time during the menstrual cycle

Below are some questions to ask yourself to see if you may have endometriosis:

YES NO
_____ _____ Do you experience so much pain during or around your period that you find yourself unable to work, attend school or social functions, or go about your normal routine?
_____ _____ Do you have any relatives that have been diagnosed with Endometriosis?
_____ _____ Do you find yourself with painful abdominal bloating, swelling or tenderness at any time in your cycle?
_____ _____ Do you have a history of painful ovarian endometriomas (“chocolate cysts”)?
_____ _____ Do you have a history of miscarriage, infertility or ectopic pregnancy?
_____ _____ Do you experience gastrointestinal symptoms during your cycle, such as nausea or vomiting and/or painful abdominal cramping accompanied by diarrhea and/or constipation?
_____ _____ Do you have a history of fatigue and/or a lowered immunity (i.e., “sick and tired” all the time)?
_____ _____ Do you have a history of allergies, which tend to worsen around your periods?
_____ _____ If you are sexually active, do you experience pain during sexual activity?
_____ _____ Do you suffer from any other autoimmune diseases (i.e., thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, or multiple sclerosis)?
_____ _____ Have you ever undergone pelvic surgery like a laparoscopy, in which Endometriosis was suspected but not definitively diagnosed?

If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, you could have Endometriosis.  Take these questions to your gynecologist for further discussion.
