International Boost Self-Esteem and Expect Success Month

(Google Image)

By Terry Orr

Self-esteem is a term used in psychology to reflect a person's overall emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude toward the self. Self-esteem is also known as the evaluative dimension of the self that includes feelings of worthiness, prides and discouragement. One's self esteem is also closely associated with self-consciousness. (Source: Wikipedia)

Confidence is generally described as a state of being certain either that a hypothesis or prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective. Self-confidence is having confidence in oneself. Arrogance or hubris in this comparison, is having unmerited confidence—believing something or someone is capable or correct when they are not. Overconfidence or presumptuousness is excessive belief in someone (or something) succeeding, without any regard for failure. Confidence can be a self-fulfilling prophecy as those without it may fail or not try because they lack it and those with it may succeed because they have it rather than because of an innate ability. (Source: Wikipedia)

According to Psych Center - Have you wondered about what self-esteem is and how to get more of it? Do you think your self-esteem is low? Do you know how to tell? Do you know what to do about it?

Self-esteem answers the question, “How do I feel about who I am?” We learn self-esteem in our family of origin; we do not inherit it.

Celebrating National Hugging Day

(Google Image)
By Terry Orr

Hugs and hugging are one of those emotions that should never go out of style!  An expression of caring, love and friendship – we are sometimes just too far removed from our fellow beings.  Hugging pets is also a beautiful thing that all can enjoy.
(Google Image)
According to punchbowl.com - Scientific studies have demonstrated that hugs are incredibly good for us. A hug can lower your blood pressure, trigger the release of healthy hormones (like oxytocin), and relieve stress. Doctors recommend a minimum of 4-6 hugs per day for our emotional and physiological well-being, but more is always better!
(Google Image)

The record for most hugs given in one hour by an individual is 1,749. Nick Vujicic achieved this feat at an expo center in Oregon in 2010.

Hug Your Boss Day

(Google Image)

By Diane Forrest

Today's work environment can be very stressful.  Talks of lay-offs, downsizing, long hours and work overload can make things very tense.  Today is a day to help ease those tensions and work stress.  Today is Hug Your Boss Day.   You shouldn't hug your boss in a creepy, sexual harassment sort of way, but just a nice friendly way to show that you appreciate your boss, and support his or her decisions, or most of them anyway.

(Google Image)
One thing to determine is whether or not you have a good relationship with your boss.  The following questions will help with that decision:
  1. Does your boss trust you?
  2. Do you trust your boss?
  3. Do you share personal stories and weekend activities?
  4. Do you work well with your boss? Are you productive?
  5. Do you know where you stand with your boss?
  6. Do you work towards the same goals?
  7. Do you socialize together?
  8. Can you speak to your boss openly about problems you have at work?
  9. Can you tell your boss a joke or funny story?
  10. Do you feel like you are both on the same side?

If you have determined that your relationship with your boss is not what you would like it to be.  Give a hug.  Think of ways you can make your relationship better and more productive in the work arena.  Some ideas include:
  • Understand the differences
  • Be true to your word, Do the things you say you are going to
  • Share not only the bad news with your boss, but also the good and positive news

(Google Image)
Here are some suggestions of things to never say to your boss from the NHYBD website:
  • Only 10 minutes to go!
  • Be my friend on Facebook
  • I don’t get paid enough for this
  • I got so wasted last night
  • That is not in my job description
  • Does it matter if I don’t finish this
  • It was not my fault!
  • How much money do you earn?
  • Yeah, Whatever!
  • I hate this company and I want to leave

So today, on Hug your boss day, lighten the tension and give your boss a hug!

Global Hug your Kid Day

(Google Image)

By Diane Forrest

When is the last time you went to a family reunion, or visited an elderly family member?  You will probably hear them tell you how much you have grown since they saw you last, hear phrases like...I remember when I used to change your diapers, or last time I saw you, you were no bigger than a minute.
(Google Image)
For those family members you don't get to see frequently, time passes quickly.  One minute you are newborn, the next you are beginning school. Before you know it you are driving, in high school, getting married, then having children of your own.  Being a young parent can be very stressful.  You have long hours of working, not enough time to spend with family or friends, and lists of chores to get done.  It feels like there isn’t enough time in the day to get all you want to get done.  Sometimes in all the hustle and bustle of daily life, kids can be pushed back, placed on the back burner.  These are the times that we as parents need to stop, take a breath, and grab our children and hold them tight. They need to know that no matter what else is going on around them, there is nothing more important to you than them.  It doesn't take long to give your child a hug, kiss them and tell them you love them.  All too quickly they grow up into the dreaded teenagers, who don't want to be seen with you.
(Google Image)
My baby will be 25 this year.  I don't get to see him often; he lives in a different city.  He was home during the 4th of July, and when I saw him I gave him a hug.  No longer is he the sweet little boy I used to pick up and hold, but he is now a man twice my size who’s hugs squeezes the life out of me. But there is no better feeling than the hug from your child.
(Google Image)
Today is Global Hug your Kid Day.  Global Hug Your Kids Day was founded in 2008 by Michelle Nichols, a 25-year sales veteran and longtime Business Week columnist. Her son, Mark, died suddenly at 8 1/2 years old from brain cancer in 1998.  This made me think of another family who recently lost their 15 year old son to pancreatic cancer, and counties other parents who have lost children due to diseases or accidents.
(Google Image)
I was reading about a sweet little 4 year old boy who was helping his father at work, taking pictures in a cemetery, when a tombstone fell on him and crushed him. These parents will never have the opportunity to hug their children again, so don't waste another minute giving your child or children hugs. If you don't have any children, hug your brother, sister, grandchild, niece or nephew, any child.  I would be wary of hugging stranger's children though, they may think you are a creeper and hit you over the head with an umbrella.  But today, and every day, never pass up an opportunity to hug your child.

Hugs are free, but they last a lifetime.

Cat lovers far and wide will agree that hugging your cat is probably one of the simplest, yet happiest, things they can do.

I know, I know, dog lovers would say the same thing. But hey…today is a day for the cats!
(Google Image)

There is nothing like a welcome home greeting from a warm purring ball of fur. So if you have been taking your cat for granted lately, go home and celebrate this ‘holiday’!
