Top 10 Bike Safety Tips

(Google Image)

By Terry Orr

The other day while drive down one of my neighborhood streets a family was riding their bikes together – mom in the lead three children following and dad bringing up the rear.  Everyone was wearing a helmet except dad.  Come on dad – you are supposed to be setting the right example for your children and they don’t need you in the hospital with a busted skull.

Top 10 Bike Safety Tips:

  1. Always wear a helmet, and make sure it is worn correctly.
  2. Ride on the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic, not against it.
  3. After age 10, do not ride on the sidewalk, as you are not readily visible when crossing streets and it is against the law in many municipalities.
  4. Obey all traffic control signals.
  5. Learn and use hand signals to alert motorists of your intention to turn, which is required by law in Connecticut.
  6. Wear proper attire, including bright colors, and layer clothing in case of weather changes.
  7. Always keep both hands on the bike ready to brake.
  8. Do not pass on the right.
  9. Use extra caution when riding on bike paths, as you may often encounter pedestrians or people walking dogs on leashes that can cut across the path.
  10. Never ride your bike during a storm or when there is snow or ice on the roadway.

So on those nice days, check your bike, put on your helmet and enjoy riding safely.
